A little about...

Our history

Centre 63 began its life as the St. Chad’s Church Youth Centre, being built by Kirkby Parish on land that it bought from the Church Commissioners for the purpose. It became an independent charity under its current memorandum and articles of association in 1988. The charity’s objects are twofold:

A) To develop Christian worship and witness within the community in and around Kirkby near Liverpool in the County of Merseyside.

B) To advance education and relieve need amongst the young persons of the community aforesaid through their leisure time activities so as to develop their physical mental and spiritual capabilities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved.

The Parochial Church Council of Kirkby has the right of appointment of four trustees, and has always taken an active interest in the life and work of the Centre.
The current Team Rector is the Chair of the Board of Trustees, and takes a pastoral role within the youth group. Recently, this has involved in a bereavement project with the young people, working with the youth workers and counsellor on a bereavement garden for young people who have suffered significant bereavements, and then working with the young people themselves on bringing together an act of worship to dedicate the garden. When our longest-serving youth worker died last year, he also worked with the young people in creating a memorial service to remember him.

We have good links with Kirkby CofE School next door to us, and we use St. Chad’s for significant services - celebrating anniversaries, etc.

We see ourselves as having a fundamentally Christian foundation, and everything we do comes out of the ethos that the Centre has as a Church of England Youth Centre.
